DETAILS

3. Initial evaluation of the donor candidate

Medical history form is carefully evaluated by Ovumia’s doctor. About 60% of donor candidates are rejected at this point due to different reasons. The doctor considers candidate`s:

  • fertility history
  • medical history
  • age
  • hereditary diseases in her family
  • motives for donation

4. Donor candidate visits Ovumia clinic for final evaluation

Approximately 30 % of the donors are rejected in final evaluation. Donor candidate meets a doctor who makes a physical evaluation as well as tells about ovarian stimulation and oocyte pick up. The donor candidate gets psychological counselling on implications of egg donation f.ex. on her legal rights and obligations, psychological considerations. She will get to know about the details of non-anonymous egg donation such as which personal information is registered in the national donor registry, and how the children originating from the eggs will get her identity information.

If the donor candidate wants to proceed an evaluative blood test is taken to give more insight about the donor candidate´s fertility. The test result is available in 1 week.

If everything is ok, the compulsory blood tests are taken to exclude sexually transmitted diseases and to confirm f. ex. a normal karyotype.
It takes 4 weeks to get the test results. If they come back ok, the donor candidate can be accepted as a donor, and she will sign the Oocyte Donation Consent. The oocyte donor has the right to set conditions on the use of the donated oocytes.

8. Life happens – Delays can occur

Our donors are altruistic and committed for the donation, but sometimes life happens, and things don’t go as planned. Donor’s treatment can be delayed for several reasons such as late cycle, ovarian cyst or low response to the stimulation.
A donor can of course get sick or there can be a sudden change in her life affecting the planned schedule of donation. She also has a right to cancel the donation consent.

9. Start of donor stimulation

When the chosen cycle of the donor begins, compulsory blood tests are taken, and the donor starts her stimulation. During the stimulation the donor has two ultrasound examinations and the day for egg collection is decided at the second ultrasound.

10. Donor´s ovum pick up, fertilisation, embryo culture and freezing of the embryos

After egg collection mature eggs are used for fertilization by ICSI (intra cytoplasmic sperm injection) with husband or donor sperm. Fertilized oocytes are cultured for 5 or 6 days until blastocyst stage. Good quality embryos are frozen and stored in liquid nitrogen to await for shipment. Target is to get two blastocysts per recipient. Sometimes the goal of two blastocysts is not reached but in majority of cases it is exceeded.

11. Embryo shipment

Embryos are shipped to recipient´s home clinic. The shipments take place approximately once a month.

At Ovumia Group, we are dedicated to using the latest advancements in reproductive technology to support our patients through every step of the embryo creation process.
